The Mimmo Rotella Institute (MRI), founded in 2012 at the wishes of Inna and Aghnessa Rotella, following the sad loss of Germano Celant, announces the establishing of the Scientific Committee composed of Vincenzo de Bellis, Elizabeth Mangini and Vicente Todolí.

From the very beginning the MRI has availed itself of the collaboration of Germano Celant for the realization of the Catalogo ragionato Mimmo Rotella [Mimmo Rotella Catalogue raisonné] and for the curating of some of the most important exhibitions devoted to the artist.

In continuity with the activities previously conducted, the MRI, under the direction of Antonella Soldaini and now with the support of the Scientific Committee, will carry forward the tasks for which it was founded: the appreciation and safeguarding of the figure and work of Mimmo Rotella through cultural initiatives such as exhibitions, publications, conferences and debates.

In this context the MRI will ensure that, respecting Germano Celant’s project and methodology, it continues the realization of the subsequent volumes of the Catalogue raisonné – the second one has just been published – as well as undertaking initiatives supporting the increased awareness, at national and international level, of Mimmo Rotella, one of the main protagonists of the Italian art of the postwar period.

Vincenzo de Bellis is Curator and Associate Director of Programs, Visual arts at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis since 2016. At Walker he has organized exhibitions of Nairy Baghramian (2017), Jimmie Durham (2017) and Mario Garcia (2018). His next projects are “The Paradox of Stillness: Art, Object and Performance” (May 2021), “American Art 1961-2001: Selections from the Walker Art Center Collections” at Palazzo Strozzi (2021) and the first US Museum retrospective of Jannis Kounellis (2022). From 2009 to 2016 de Bellis was founding director and curator of Peep-Hole Art Center in Milan. In 2015, de Bellis curated “Ennesima, an Exhibition of Seven Exhibitions on Italian Art” at Triennale in Milan. He has also served as artistic director of MiArt in Milan from 2012 to 2016. Previously, he held curatorial roles at Museion, Bolzano and GAMeC, Bergamo. De Bellis holds a Master of Arts in Curatorial Studies from Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College and he is a member of the Steering Committee of the Contemporary Curators Conference. He is a contributor to numerous exhibition catalogs and art publications.

Elizabeth Mangini is Associate Professor and Chair of the History of Art and Visual Culture at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She is the author of numerous essays on postwar and contemporary art, a regular contributor to Artforum, and editorial board member for Palinsesti. Contemporary Italian Art On-Line journal. Professor Mangini has held curatorial positions and postgraduate fellowships at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and MASS MOCA, North Adams. In 2017, Mangini, in conversation with Germano Celant, presented the first volume of Mimmo Rotella Catalogue raisonné to the American public and press at CIMA, Center for Italian Modern Art, in New York. Her most recent project, a book entitled Seeing Through Closed Eyelids: Giuseppe Penone and the Nature of Sculpture, is forthcoming from University of Toronto Press in spring 2021.
